Paws to Heart Rescue Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3)non profit organization serving the Greater Philadelphia area. Founded in 2012 by Kristen Sarmiento, our mission is to give homeless animals a second chance at life through our rescue, foster, and adoption programs. To achieve our mission, Paws to Heart Rescue has established the following goals:
Since our inception, we have rescued and rehomed thousands of pets that otherwise may have been doomed. Most of our foster homes and events are in Eastern Pennsylvania but we partner with shelters, fosters, and volunteers nationwide.
As a foster home based organization, all of the dogs and many of the cats in our care are in temporary, private pre-screened homes until adopted. Because they live with our volunteers’ families until they are adopted, we are able to learn a lot about their behaviors, personalities, and likes and dislikes. For those who say they could never foster because they would become too attached, think of all the countless lives you could save by providing a safe haven for animals in need. You could save dozens, even hundreds of lives, just by providing a warm and loving temporary place for them to stay while they await their forever home. There is no greater joy than seeing these wonderful pets move on into their forever homes and opening up a spot in your home to continually save more.
In 2013, Paws to Heart partnered with PetValu so that we can reach even more people interested in adopting a rescued pet. We currently have one site where some of our cats and kittens stay until they are adopted:
PetValu 511 S. Oxford Valley Rd. Fairless Hills, PA
Cats are available for adoption 7 days a week at each store, however adopters must be submit an application and be approved to adopt first. Volunteers help care for and socialize these cats each day at different times. This offsite location allows us to take in more animals in need and reduce overcrowding at the shelters we pull from.
Many of the animals rescued by Paws to Heart Rescue have been pulled from overcrowded shelters where they were in danger of being euthanized, at times by inhumane methods such as in enclosed decompression chambers or intercardial injection. Puppies, kittens, mixed breeds, and purebreds may fall victim and for many of these animals, we are their last chance.
You can do your part to help animal overpopulation by spaying or neutering your pet. If you are concerned about the cost, please contact us. We have relationships with many lower cost veterinarians and clinics that we can refer you to.
Our Approval Process & Fees
We contact all applicants, whether it be for fostering or adopting, within 2 days. We require two personal references that we can talk to and the legal names of any adults in the home. We conduct a background check and reference checks which usually takes a day or so, depending on when references respond to us by phone. Once an applicant is approved, they are contacted and a meet and greet is scheduled, usually at the applicant's home. If we mutually agree that it is a good a fit, the applicant can adopt the pet at that time. The applicant will sign an adoption agreement, receive the pet's veterinary paperwork and information to register their microchip if applicable.
Our adoption fees range in price from $100 to $400. The fee covers the expenses that we put into rescuing our adoptable pets such as vaccinations, food, and spaying or neutering as well as paying it forward towards other animals in need of extensive care. Adoption fees are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
